Dream (Sarah Ellis, 2021)

theatre,virtual

A virtual reality-based piece by the Royal Shakespeare Company inspired by Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream where the audience remotely attends a live performance with motion capture and a virtual environment.

The audience follows Puck, the spirit protagonist of the Shakespearean play, through a wooded universe created using the Unreal engine, originally created for video game design. The actors perform the piece in motion-capture costumes. The audience accesses the piece through their computer or mobile device, where they perceive the digital world inhabited by equally virtual characters that are constructed in real time on the performance and voice of the actors who interpret them in the stage space. Likewise, the soundtrack is responsive to the actions of the actors.
