Desert Rain (Blast Theory, 1999)

interaction,theatre,virtual

Six participants enter a virtual world related to the Gulf War that is projected onto a descending water curtain in which they must find a target for 30 minutes and then leave the virtual world to reach a final physical environment.

A performer invited them to wear hooded jackets and gave them each a card with a target. They were led to a cubicle where they stood on a platform in front of a water curtain. The curtain projected a virtual world based on the Gulf War in which they could move around on the platform to find their target. They were animated via headphones by two performers who observed them and in this world they could find each other. Once they reached their target, a performer emerged from the water curtain to give them a second card and they moved on to another virtual phase: a huge hangar inhabited by clouds of numbers indicating Iraqi casualties. Finally, they left the virtual world and advanced through a corridor blocked by sand, until they reached a hotel room where the new card allowed them to watch their target’s statements about the war on a television.

Premiered on 18 October 1999 at the Now 99 Festival in Nottingham (UK). Nominated for an Interactive Arts BAFTA Award in 2000.
