Artifical Changelings (Toni Dove, 1998)

installation,interaction

A dynamic conversation takes place between the visitor and an interactive film, who can control the narrative with their choices in a shopping thriller that travels from late 19th century Paris to an undefined future.

Immersive environment with a curved screen with rear projection. The participant enters a central halo of light and can then move to one of four light-marked locations in the space. The distance to the screen, as well as changing the physical position – and thus the point of view – modifies the images on screen and the sound space, depending on greater intimacy – the images become close-ups and the sound is attenuated – or distance – more open planes and more intense sound. The story follows Arathusa, a self-destructive kleptomaniac from Victorian society who gets off on stealing, and can jump if the visitor moves to a marked location in space to that of Zileth, a hacker in search of enemies and obsessed with power.

Premiered in 1998 at the Rotterdam Film Festival. https://vimeo.com/286928380
