Baby Jessica’s Well-made Play (Walkup Arts, 2018)

dramaturgy of sound,telepresence,theatricality,transpandemic stage

This play is designed for a single spectator and takes place over a two-night period through a phone call. It is based on the story of a girl who fell into a well and whose rescue lasted for more than two days.

The starting point is the story of “Baby Jessica” who, at 18 months, fell into a well in 1987 and became trapped over 6 meters below the surface. The widely covered rescue operation lasted for 58 hours. The play, although created in 2018, had a resurgence during the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, encouraging its lone audience member over the phone to create their own well, whether it be in a closet or under a table. Written by Philip Santos Schaffer and directed by Isabel Quinzaños Alonso, the piece includes recordings and real-time conversations that engage the listener, inviting them to speak with certain individuals. It has continued to be performed in 2023.
