Sacrifice (Meiro Koizumi, 2018)

installation,theatricality,virtual reality

Virtual reality piece in which multiple participants enter the life of a young Iraqi who lost his family.

The author explains how during a visit to Iraq, he met a young man named Ahmad, whose story is recreated through virtual reality in this piece. When Ahmad was 13 years old, he was walking along a river with his family when they were suddenly attacked by a helicopter, and five family members were killed before his eyes. The virtual reality goggles immerse the viewer into Ahmad’s virtual body, allowing him to narrate his experience firsthand. According to Koizumi, the piece aims to create a communal experience of mourning for the victims of the tragedy, while also providing a critical experience to question the state of our bodies in contemporary society.
