Lovers (Dumb Type, 1994)

installation,interaction,intermedial

Installation consisting of a room surrounded by images of naked people that react through sensors to the movements of the visitor.

The visitor enters a square room with a panoramic 360º projection on its walls, coming from seven projectors located in a central tower. The images are of real-life-sized women and men bodies, moving through the dark walls. While one man runs around the room, two figures embrace, and others strike poses. A sensor system responds to the visitor’s movement, making text appear on the floor and screens. For example, a circle is projected on the ground around the visitor indicating “«Do not cross the line or jump over», and over some images, the text «Don’t f*ck with me, fellah, use your imagination» appears. If the observer moves towards the wall, occasionally the image of Teiji Furuhashi, the director of the piece, appears, moving forward and gesturing to embrace, eventually joining his hands and disappearing into the darkness again.

Premiered in 1994 in Canon Artlab – Tokyo, Japan
