State vs. Natasha Banina (Arlekin Players Theatre, 2020)

mediatized theatre,telepresence,theatricality,transpandemic stage,virtual reality

Online piece featuring a solo actress who undergoes a trial subjected to the decisions of the audience.

A Russian teenager shares the story of her life in an orphanage in a small town, and how her desire for freedom led her to commit a crime of passion. In a “Zoom courtroom”, as the company describes it, she appeals to the audience, who takes on the role of the jury, allowing them to decide whether they consider her guilty of murder. This piece, hosted on Zoom, features a single actress from the Russian-Ukrainian company Arlekin Players Theatre and was created during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. Like other virtual theater productions, it aims to transcend telepresence by seeking audience interaction.

Premiered on August 20, 2020, online via Zoom.
