Etiquette (Ant Hampton and Silvia Mercuriali (Rototaza), 2007)

autotheater,dramaturgy of sound,immersion

Experience for two people guided by headphones in a public space where both perform the actions indicated to them, thus generating an interaction between them where no one else intervenes.

The piece takes place in a public space, where two participants interact, unaffected by other people who may be in the venue and unaware of the unfolding of the work. For half an hour, the two individuals wear headphones that guide them through the actions or words they must perform. According to its creators, «the conversation is presented as a kind of theater in which the roles of the audience and actor are assumed and imperceptibly exchanged». The aim is to explore human communication between the private worlds of the two protagonists, and it falls under the category of «autotheater» coined by Hampton and Mercuriali for this type of experience, in which there are no actors, but don’t take place in solitude either, but rather the participants take on the role of interpreters.
